Breaking the Process Rut with the Genius of Invention 🔧

Last month we used Wonder to question whether we were solving the right problem. This month we move from asking to building. August belongs to Invention (I) — the Genius that generates new ways of working when the old playbook has quietly become the constraint.

Here is your 3-2-1 for the month: 3 Insights, 2 Questions, and 1 Actionable Nudge.

3 INSIGHTS ON INVENTION

  1. Invention is not brainstorming theater. A whiteboard full of sticky notes is not a new process. Invention is complete when a team can describe a different way to deliver the same result — and is willing to try one version in the real world.

  2. Familiar workflows hide declining returns. When every meeting produces only incremental tweaks of last year’s system, the team is protecting comfort, not impact. Small edits to a tired process rarely create a different outcome.

  3. Constraints are fuel, not fences. The Invention Genius does its best work when the goal is fixed and the method is not. “Same result, new path” is more useful than “add another step to what we already do.”

2 QUESTIONS TO PONDER

  1. If we could not use our current workflow, meeting cadence, or software stack for 30 days, how would we still deliver this result?

  2. Where are we rewarding people for refining yesterday’s process instead of inventing a better one?

1 ACTIONABLE NUDGE: Notice. Nudge. Normalize.

  • Notice: A team meeting yields only incremental variations of existing workflows rather than fresh ideas. People are busy, polite, and stuck in the same sequence.

  • Nudge: Trigger Invention by asking:

“What is the most radical, unconventional way we could deliver this exact same result?”

Then hold the silence. Do not evaluate the first three ideas. Capture volume first.

  • Normalize: Establish a quarterly Clean Slate ideation session where the goal is high-volume, unconstrained ideas. No budgets, no “we tried that,” and no owners until the last 15 minutes. After the session, pick one idea small enough to test in two weeks.
